JAMES MURRAY Obituary

MURRAY, James H. "Jim" Jr. Age 80, passed peacefully while surrounded by loved ones in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on November 28, 2022. He was born on September 3, 1942, in Lowell, MA, to James H. Murray, Sr. and Alice (Kilmartin) Murray, where the family were long time members of St. Margaret's Catholic Church on Stevens St. Jim graduated from Keith Academy in 1960, the University of Notre Dame in 1964, and received his MBA from Wharton in 1966. In the fall of 1966, he entered the U.S. Army as a 1st lieutenant Field Medical Assistant. He served in the Vietnam War, reaching the rank of 2nd lieutenant and earning a Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone before receiving a medical honorable discharge in the summer of 1968. Upon his return to civilian life, Jim married Louise Brennan in 1969 and worked at Gillette before earning his J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1972. In 1973, they moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where Jim practiced law and was a devoted father, husband, brother, son, and friend for the remainder of his years. Jim's passions in life, other than his family, were golf, Notre Dame football, and the Boston Red Sox. He was an excellent golfer, particularly in his youth, but was unfortunately a terrible putter as he would often lament. Later in life, he had to give up golf and discovered Notre Dame chat rooms as a hobby. Those sites have surely noticed a drop-off in chat volume recently. As a true Red Sox fan, he was certain that he would never live to see them win a World Series. Much to his surprise and delight, he was wrong about that! Jim remained extremely close to his surviving brother, Joe Murray of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and his late sister, Alice Murray, also of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He remained devoted to his late wife, Louise, who passed in 2020. He had many loyal friends, several of whom were able to visit and help as his health began to fail. His children, Jimmy and Susan, will very much miss the frequent lengthy phone conversations with their father. He is survived by his son, Jim Murray and his wife, Allison, of Southport, CT; and their three children: Jack (17), Ryan (15), and Matthew (12); and his daughter, Susan Frazier of Rye, NY, her husband, Tom; and their four children: Wesley (9), Owen (9), Tommy (7), and Katie (4). Jim's Memorial Service will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, at 11am on January 14, 2023, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Jimmy Fund.

My prayers to Jim´s family. I knew Jim because his younger brother Joe and I were best friends in our early years. I spent many pleasant days and nights with the Murray and Kilmartins. You tried to keep me out of Nam Jim. But I went anyway.

I'm sorry I haven't sent a condolence till now. James was such a great guy my dad William F. Barrett who passed away talked to Jim every night they had great talks about the war and the old times for hours. And he was there for his Brother Joe when Jimmy was in the hospital if someone could reach out to his brother that would be great. I found an old message on the answering machine of Joe wishing my dad a Happy father's day,.

Jimmy and Susan - I loved your dad. He was such a good friend for so many years - we worked together and after he retired we kept in touch texting when ND was playing - keeping up with family matters. We got together when the Oldermans were in town. Jim was a gentleman and one of the finest people I've ever had the honor to know. I will miss him so much. Jimmy - I'm the person who wrote to Ted Williams and got you a picture signed by him. Your dad was so pleased and knew you would be too. I am so sad.

Never met Jim in person, but we were members of the same Notre Dame site for years so we got to know each other thru the site and exchanging hundreds of emails thru the years. Jim was a genuinely kind and humble man. He was like the big brother I never had. He's in heaven now.

Thank you for making everyone aware of Jim´s death.
We were fellow members of ND Class of 1964 and I felt like we were good friends. Saw him once since graduation, at our 50 year reunion. He hadn´t changed.
One of my memories is that Jim spent the first three years at ND complaining because his dad didn´t let him go to BC. He finally realized in his senior year that he was in a great place.
A fun guy to be around. I´ll remember him fondly.
